Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get my son started in Cub Scouting?

The first step is to attend a den meeting with your child.  There are four ranks in Cub Scouts: Tiger, Wolf, Bear, and Webelos.  Tiger rank is for boys who are under the age of 8 and have completed kindergarten or are in the first grade.  Tigers attend all functions with their adult partner.  The Wolf rank is for boys who have completed first grade or are 8 years  old.  Bear rank is for boys who have completed the second grade or are 9 years old.  Webelos dens are for boys who have completed third grade or reached the age of 10.

Pack and den meeting dates are posted on Cub Scout Pack 58’s website, www.pack58.org.  Just click on “Calendar” in the upper left hand corner of the home page.

At the den meeting you will be introduced to your den leader, who will guide you through the next steps of the process.

How do I contact my den leader?

Contact information for all adult leaders within the pack are also found on the pack’s website.

What is a Webelo?

Webelo stands for “We’ll Be Loyal Scouts”.  The Webelo program is designed to aid the transition of a Cub Scout to a Boy Scout.  Webelos have the option to wear a different colored uniform (tan/olive similar to the Boy Scout uniform) than the Tiger, Wolf, and Bear Scouts (blue).

How often do the scouts meet?

Pack meetings are held once a month.  Den meetings are usually held every two weeks.

What if I miss a den or pack meeting?

Attendance at scout meetings is not mandatory.  Often times the cubmaster or den leader will send out emails keeping scouts and their families informed on the goings on, etc.  If you are unable to attend a meeting, however, be sure to continue to work on your particular rank’s achievements, as the den group will move forward through them every time they meet.  That way you will be able to keep up and be on the same page as everyone else at the next meeting.

What are achievements?

Achievements are the various activities scouts do to earn their merit badge.  As a bear, for example, the scout must complete the requirements for twenty-four achievements over the course of the academic year (ie: September-May).  The den usually addresses a new achievement every time they meet.

What is the difference between the “Arrow of Light Award” and “Arrow Points”?

An arrow point is an award for earning 10 elective credits as a Wolf or Bear Cub Scout.  The first 10 electives earned in either rank are represented by a Gold Arrow Point.  Subsequent groups of 10 earn Silver Arrow Points.

The Arrow of Light Award is the highest rank in Cub Scouting and is usually earned in the second year of Webelos scouting.  A boy who has earned the Arrow of Light Award is eligible to become a Boy Scout and wear this badge on his Boy Scout uniform.

Where do I get my uniform and handbook?

Each scout should obtain a uniform and a handbook for their particular rank.  These may be purchased at the Twin Valley Council Center for Scouting, 810 Madison Avenue, Mankato, MN  56001.  Their phone number is (507) 387-3123.  Visit the Twin Valley Council website and click on “Scout Shop” for details and online ordering information.
