About Cub Scout Pack 58

Cub Scout Pack 58/Troop 58 of the Great Bend District within the Twin Valley Council was chartered on November 19, 1948.  First Lutheran Church, under the ministry of Pastor Alan Bray, served as its charter organization.  A copy of the original charter is displayed in a showcase at the church.  Meetings were held at Gustavus Adolphus College on Tuesday evenings at 7:00 p.m.  Back then, our district name was “TraversedesSioux”, and the council went by the name of “Minnesota Valley Council”.  November 2009 marks Pack and Troop 58’s sixty-first year as a chartered organization.

Dedicated individuals have taken leadership roles in Cub Scout Pack 58 throughout the years.  From 1980-1982 Bill Riebesell took on the duties of cubmaster.  He was followed by Tom Stienessen beginning in 1984 through 1986.  Rich Rustman served as assistant cubmaster from 1987-1989 before Jim Johnson took over as cubmaster from 1989-1997.  Jean Gansen held the lead role from 2002-2004 followed by Jeff Kienholz from 2004-2009.  Craig Schrumpf served as interim cubmaster in 2009 until Meryl Frank took over in July of that year.

At its peak, pack 58 had a membership between 75-90 scouts.  Pack 58 has earned both the “Quality Unit Award” and “Centennial Quality Unit Award”.  These awards are given out by the council at the time of rechartering.  They recognize outstanding packs and troops that conduct quality programs for youth.  Criteria for the awards include professional quality training of the pack’s leaders, advancement in rank of the scouts, and a consistent percent of member retention.  Pack 58 was recognized as a Quality Unit during the years under the leadership of Jim Johnson as well as in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2006.  The Centennial Quality Unit Award has been bestowed annually since 2007.

We want to thank the countless number of individuals who have supported this pack since its inception.  Because of you, we not only stand proud of our history, we look forward to our future.
